St Petersburg June Meeting

June monthly meeting hosted Florida Senator and Senate Whip, Jim Sebesta. .Senator Sebesta, dynamic, informative and entertaining can put the mike away and communicate throughout all of Piccadilly's Restaurant. The Senator began with his own special tribute to Ronald Reagan, touched on many items of interest from the just ended legislative session mélange, constitutional amendment process concurs, bullet train cost and return to the non passage of a bill that would have permitted Senior Citizens in Retirement facilities to play bingo. Yes, currently in the state of Florida that is illegal.

On the legislative session currently concluded those last days in the House were analogous to the last days of Pompeii, get out of Dodge quick. While the Senate kept vigil for last minute action before session closure, House Representatives were on the homeward bound trail.

The senator noted that constitutional amendment issues and current procedures to place items on the ballot are scary.  Why? Apparently if sufficient money is thrown at the process for a million dollars or so one can get an item on the ballot before voters, who frequently vote on what sounds good without any understanding of the real impact to taxpayers.  Now consider the ramifications of that capability.  The wealthy buy legislation that make them wealthier at the expense of everyone else. Apparently, the Senator has an exact case on point disclosed during the meeting.

And while that happens Senior Citizens who play bingo in Senior Facilities are raided by the Sheriff's Department and subject to arrest. Fortunately the next legislative session will address both these issue and more.

As to the Bullet train, very expensive and currently to be funded by taxpayers unless the plan is repealed and a different array of funding sources established.  The Senator noted recent test of one bidder's train traveled at 420 Mile Per Hour or 7 miles a minute.  That make the trip from Orlando to Tampa just about 6 minutes without get up to speed and slow down time added. But the Senator believes the attraction to Tourist world wide, to experience travel from Disney to the Gulf Beaches in such short order, would ultimately pay the freight on construction via Revenue Bonds.

While waiting for the meeting film to load into your browser review the photo collage of meeting attendees. How aware of movers and shakers in Pinellas are you and can you match names and faces?

Film is large and even with Cable or DSL Internet access take time. If utilizing dial up modem access, please don't even consider but rather wait for the Video/Audio CD of all Republican Party club meetings to be released.
