Deveron M. Gibbons
Senior Public Affairs Advisor with Holland & Knight
May 12 -- As guest speaker Advisor Gibbons discussed
legislative accomplishments and associated hurdles as viewed by a lobbyist.
Before introductions President Gail Hebert attended to last
minute
changes on the evenings agenda.
The invocation and pledge were led by Martin Rainey, Church Elder and
club Treasurer.
Introductions of elected officials, candidates and their representatives
included Senator Dennis Jones and Rochelle Warmouth, Representing
Ronnie Duncan, Candidate for County
Commissioner.
Also present were Lucile Casey, Candidate for County Commissioner, Brian Aungst's Representative and Tim Glassburner Candidate for County Sheriff
As the audience listened attentively, Guest Speaker Gibbons described
various House Bills and their significance. He specifically touched on Health
Care, the Trauma and Stoke
Bill
funding, Ban on Cell phone usage, Brown Field Redevelopment and raising
the consequences for harassment actions directed toward Crime Watch citizens. In
summary, additional state dollars have been allocated to support those health
care facilities identified as specialists in the delivery of services to Trauma
and Stroke victims. He noted that uniquely required doctors, but hard to find,
require enormous levels of compensation to come and practice their skills in the
Tampa Bay area. He continued with the funding and issues involved in Brown
Fields redevelopment. That is, funds to reclaim land once deemed unusable.
Discussions touched on raising the penalty for harassment of Crime Watch
citizens to felony status. He noted the example that sometimes after a drug bust
precipitated by a community minded Crime Watch person, the drug lords commence a
serious of retaliatory actions as payback. Hopefully the new legislation
will minimize that activity.
On occasion to add details or clarify a point, Senator Dennis Jones was asked
to comment and always at the ready, the good Senator expounded on factors and
facts related to the issue.
Mr. Daryle Rouson, a long time friend of Speaker Gibbons and head of the areas
